New Space Economy: Piemonte to bring science into orbit
The Italian North-Western region is one of the leading contributors to the “Beyond” next space mission bringing some important experiments aboard the International Space Station
The Beyond mission departing in July for the International Space Station will bring a part of Piemonte's industrial and scientific excellence in the Sdx18 capsule. The North-Western region of Italy is an important international hub for aerospace and is ready to seize the multiple opportunities of the new Space Economy: Piemonte is in fact the place where important experiments to be performed on board the ISS were developed. Amyloid Aggregation will investigate the behavior under microgravity conditions of some peptide aggregates linked to neurodegenerative diseases. The study, developed by the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale (Experimental Institute for Zooprophylaxis) based in Torino in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the aerospace company ALTEC, will allow to unveil new horizons for the treatment of Alzheimer and of other severe degenerative diseases. ALTEC, which is a center of excellence for the supply of engineering and logistics services for planetary exploration
operations and missions, is also partner in the Acoustic Diagnostics experiment whose aim is to examine the effects of microgravity and noise concerning astronauts' hearing problems. Tyvak International collaborated in the conception of a series of tests for the development of an approach system from the low Earth orbit. Demonstrations that will advance the technological and operational knowledge are also scheduled: the latter will allow man, together with robots, to explore the Lunar and Martian surfaces from orbit and on the surface. These are but a few projects chosen by the Italian Space Agency to be carried out on the ISS. This achievement is also possible thanks to the support of the program promoted by Argotec in collaboration with Telespazio to provide the Italian Space Agency with services for the scientific activity on board that started in May 2018.
