The car is increasingly connected: with the devices that the driver takes on board, with service providers, with the road infrastructure and with other vehicles. In addition, it displays more and more intelligent systems that are able to control the vehicle and provide several assistance services for the driver as well as for the passengers. Precisely this accessibility to connections and intelligence on board the vehicle also allows cyber criminals to breach the vehicle systems and install malicious softwares, taking control or preventing / modifying their use. The danger to the user is not confined to the risk of losing personal data or seeing them improperly disseminated, but it also affects physical safety as the criminal / hacker can take complete control of the vehicle, in particular steering, accelerator and brakes. It is therefore essential to protect the vehicle system from these risks, with adequate cyber security.

Here companies like Aizoon and Reply, both active in the field of Big Data and IoT, start-ups like Drivesec which develops cybersecurity solutions for the automotive and IoT sector and international companies such as the German Objective Software - IT company developing software solutions for autonomous vehicles - interact with main players in the automotive sector like Magneti Marelli and FCA, to produce safe systems according to the concept of security by design.
The main security challenge is to manage the software life cycle as well as the integration of different systems. Securing a connected car is a process that starts even before the development of the vehicle and does not end with the production: it necessarily includes updates throughout the life of the vehicle. It is a complex and multi-layered process that can be developed at its best in areas with a strong propensity for innovation and contamination, just like Piemonte, region that guarantees constant cooperation between large producers, start-ups, SMEs, universities and research centers.
Cybersecurity is one of the new development trends of automotive in Piemonte and it will be one of the themes of VTM - Vehicle and Transportation Technology Innovation Meetings scheduled in Torino on the 1st and 2nd April 2020, the second edition of the business convention that brings together the global automotive community - car manufacturers and related industries, subcontractors, decision makers - that will inspire a packed b2b agenda, conferences and technical workshops on the future of the mobility sector.
