The right landing and development place for innovative companies and multinationals
In Italy, life sciences – specifically biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical devices – represent one of the most promising hi-tech industrial sector with a significant growth potential in the medium to long term. Piemonte, in the north-west of Italy, is playing a pivotal role at national and international level. It is featured by a top public healthcare system endowed with first level know-how: Piemonte ranks 1st in Europe in Organ Transplantology and excels in the fields of Oncology and Cardiology. Its super performing academic system is headed by the University of Torino and University of Eastern Piemonte, both leading institutions in all medicine-related departments, technology development as well as research: together with Politecnico di Torino they offer an efficient academic nucleus closely interlinked with the entrepreneurial environment and guarantee top class innovation and technology transfer. On top of this, the Regional Technological Platforms and the Innovation Hubs are drivers of innovation and research programmes involving the public system, big players and companies: successful results in terms of new medical applications, diagnostics, medical sensor technology and automation arise from this efficient cooperation. Last but not least, Piemonte boasts a fertile and diversified industrial backbone, where traditionally strong sectors are developing new technologies and remedies: more precisely Piemonte’s agrifood sector is more and more involved in the nutraceutical field as well as mechatronics, robotics and ICT companies are focusing on new qualifying equipment and solutions.
These are but a few strengths of Piemonte’s life sciences ecosystem that are decisional levers to locate in the region. Since the beginning of 2000 important players and a variety of stakeholders in the life sciences sector, such as Bracco Imaging, have moved their R&D activities to the region, bolstering its role as scientific and innovation hub. Advanced Accelerator Application, the French based CERN spin-off recently acquired by Novartis, installed its industrial pharmaceutical laboratory in Piemonte, while the Spanish bioinformatics company NorayBio set up his Italian office here.
The technological innovation and the high quality of research are key elements of the regional complete and integrated life sciences system. The Bioindusry Park and the Molecular Biotechnology Center of the University of Torino are two scientific reference points that enhance research results in the healthcare sector and turn them into technological innovations and sustain the launch, growth, and development of innovative and globally competitive companies. The biotechnology company Creabilis Therapeutics is an example: born and developed within the Bionindustry Park, it was acquired by the Californian Sienna Biopharmaceuticals, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on topical products in medical dermatology and aesthetics.
The Bioindustry Park is also home to the French EPygon and to the Swiss company Aorticlab that together with the Italian Innovhearth found in Piemonte the right competencies and the knowledge in the cardiovascular field necessary to develop innovative solutions in the field of transcatheter mitral valves.
International players like Horizon Discovery (UK) and Fresenius-Unicyte AG (CH) are located in the Molecular Biotechnology Center (MBC), the interdisciplinary biomedical research centre of the University of Torino focusing on the study of the molecular mechanisms at the basis of physio pathological processes that have a great impact on human health, such as cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, cancer and stem cell biology. The MBC hosts also the Technology Transfer Center, which fills the gap between academia and industry by building relationships with biotechnology companies. These are but a few international companies that chose Piemonte for their investments. The region also hosts: Ephoran, Huvepharma, Ab Sciex, Agilent Technologies, Merck Serono, Sicor (Teva), Diasorin, Delpharm, Ucb Pharma, LIvanova, Olon, ELitechGroup, CID – Carbonstent & Implantable Devices.
Piemonte ranks high in the European scene as a strategic partner for cooperation, R&D and investments in life science and converging technologies sector: trust Piemonte, fill in the form and discover a powerful location for scientific and industrial partners and new businesses to set up
