The fourth edition of VTM opened on March 26th in the presence of Alberto Cirio, President of the Regione Piemonte, Fabrizio Ricca Regional Minister for Internationalization, Andrea Tronzano Regional Minister for Ecoomic Development, Dario Gallina, President of the Torino Chamber of Commerce and Stéphane Castet President of ABE, Dario Peirone, President of Piemonte Agency, Marco Gay President of Confindustria Piemonte, Giorgio Marsiaj, President of Unione Industriali Torino and Alberto Russo, Vice President of Api Torino.
The first contribution of the conference by Bain & Company Italia presented the industry scenario, outlining challenges and opportunities deriving from decarbonization, new geopolitical balances and possible strategic developments for the automotive industry. Autotech Venture intervened by delineating the main technological areas of interest for large investment companies. Finally, Stellantis drew a roadmap on sustainable mobility combined with a dedicated panel participated by Accenture, Dumarey Group, FEV Europe, Texa, Vishay and Hyundai Mobis, followed by an in-depth analysis on artificial intelligence and connectivity by ART, Blue Engineering and CSI.
Over 40 thematic sessions and sponsored workshops offered insights and discussions from over 90 leading industry figures, along 20 start-ups that presented innovative solutions.
THE EXHIBITION: PREVIEWS, EXHIBITION, START UP AREA
VTM 2024 presented a futuristic vision of urban mobility, featured by a more efficient and sustainable transport system: the integration of autonomous electric vehicles, intelligent transport networks, advanced car and bike sharing systems and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, together with micromobility and eVTOL, as a solution to create an intermodal and sustainable system. This was the common thread that guided the exhibition of vehicles, innovations and solutions for the mobility of the future, all conceived, designed and produced in Piemonte: 26 companies exhibited the skills of a territory cradle of technologies and skills that precisely respond to these future changes. Important national previews were also presented: the prototype of Kimera's EVO 38, a reinterpretation of the iconic Lancia sports car built in Torino; the 273 Potenza by MAT - Manifattura Automobili Torino, a unique supercar that combines top quality materials, authentic design and advanced engineering and performance; H2 Speed is Pininfarina's innovative vision of a high-performance track car based on revolutionary hydrogen technology; the advanced style center GFG Style exhibited the GFG Kangaroo, a two-seater electric Hyper-SUV concept car designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro, with 4-wheel drive and 4-wheel steering; Dumarey Group presented the 6.6-liter V8 engine powered exclusively by hydrogen, a valid alternative to achieve decarbonization of the transport sector.
Various innovations caught the attention of visitors, such as the self-driving electric Trolleybus by Blue Engineering; Fillee, Reefilla's innovative and powerful electric vehicle mobile charging solution; MacFly, 2Electron’s software that recreates the driving sensations of an internal combustion engine on electric vehicles; GTL 8X1, self-driving electric micro-vehicle for personal mobility endowed within AlbaRobot’s structures; an e-Bike by Mobilitas in collaboration with Zeroundici, a vehicle designed for e-bike fleets, equipped with integrated GPS for the km certification and therefore the CO2 saved; EPICO, the first full electric Italian vehicle conceived by Regis Motors (Mecaprom Engineering) for the transport of goods and designed with automotive standards, approved as a heavy quadricycle which, with its small size and cycling characteristics, allows to transport goods easily and economically; the scale reproduction of FEV's eVTOL (vertical take-off vehicle) Sky Cab, concept design of an air taxi; Teoresi presented research and development projects such as MOST and ENVELOPE in which he collaborates in the field of software-defined-vehicles and new 5G and 6G technology solutions applied to autonomous-driving and connected vehicles.
An entire area was dedicated to 20 start-ups from Italy, Japan and Israel: a real garage of innovative ideas that offered solutions related to sustainability in terms of electrification, connectivity, autonomous driving, infotainment, cybersecurity and new mobility solutions such as Point Zero which presented ZEDS, a technology that aims to eliminate secondary particulate emissions from braking systems, with a combination of electric motor and the innovative magnetorheological brake for safe, efficient and pollution-free mobility. AITEM is a Torino-based startup, spinoff of the Dumarey Group, founded in 2020 and at the forefront of technological innovation, specialized in the development of AI solutions in various vertical sectors, including veterinary, industrial and medical. In the B2C sector, Gregario develops frames and cycling components in integral monocoque carbon fiber, but tailor-made thanks to an innovative variable geometry mold technology. The innovative startup GeDy TrAss, a spin-off of the Polytechnic of Torino, develops software to speed up and improve the design of mechanical gear transmissions.
AUTOMOTIVE IN PIEMONTE: TRADITION AND INNOVATION FOR THE MOBILITY OF THE FUTURE
Piemonte, North-West Italy, and its capital Torino are the beating heart of the Italian automotive industry and of the European automotive and mobility transport technology. The most important players in the automotive world are based in Piemonte: OEMs, SMEs, a complete supply chain, R&D centers and high engineering schools. The synergy between these entities strongly contributes to the positioning of the region among the major automotive clusters, not only in Europe, but worldwide.
The production chain in Piemonte is comprehensive and offers a unique know-how that starts from the concept of the vehicle up to its delivery: design, prototyping, styling, robotics and automation, components, production, industrialization and testing. The supply chain also offers strong expertise in the field of electrical and electronic architecture, including energy conversion systems, real time communication systems, advanced human-machine interface systems and remote control. Thanks to the strong experience and integrated approach towards sustainable mobility, it is possible to find in Piemonte the due know-how for vehicle integration and solutions dedicated to electric mobility and for the development of new intelligent mobility concepts, integrating vehicles and infrastructure through application of advanced digital technologies for connectivity, autonomous driving, sharing mobility, Internet of Things and Big Data, projecting the entire territory towards new challenges and new markets.
The latest Observatory on Italian automotive components and mobility services 2023, published by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and ANFIA, registered 728 companies in Piemonte (33.5% of the Italian total), confirming the area as the first Italian region by number of companies active in the automotive components sector. The Observatory also highlights that the turnover generated by Piemonte automotive components alone (€19.2 billion, 34% of the Italian total) grew by +5.8% in 2022 compared to 2021 and stresses the strong propensity to export: 81.6% of Piemonte companies sell abroad compared to 80% in the rest of Italy.
According to recent figures from Unioncamere Piemonte based on Istat data, the growth of Piemonte’s exports in 2023 is mostly due to the export of vehicles, a sector which recorded a +38.5% compared to 2022. Means of transport are therefore confirmed the first sector for regional exports, with a share of 25.3% and a growth of 24.9% compared to 2022.
