Amazon's investments in Piemonte, a strategic region for innovation and logistics.

AmazonFounded in 1994 as an online bookstore, Amazon soon evolved into a shop that ships products to over 200 countries worldwide through 23 marketplaces. As a result of its global expansion operations, since 2010, the multinational company has opened 60 facilities throughout Italy - logistics headquarters, corporate offices, data centres and customer service - generating 18,000 permanent jobs.

The project in Piemonte

Piemonte now accounts for 3,700 Amazon employees and confirms its supremacy in the field of research and innovation as the only region in Italy that can boast the presence of two R&D centres: Torino is home to the centre dedicated to improving the virtual assistant Alexa, while Asti is focused on Amazon Web Services.
In addition, the Vercelli distribution centre is home to the European Operations Innovation Lab, a laboratory designed to improve employees' safety levels through the development of cutting-edge technologies. Established in 2019, the lab has already produced over 550 new technologies in its first three years of operation, against an investment of €400 million.

The region also reinforces its competitive role in the field of logistics thanks to the presence of:
Three fulfilment centres employing 3,350 permanent employees: Torrazza Piemonte (TO), opened in 2019 with an investment of €150 million; Vercelli, opened in 2017; Agognate (Novara), opened in 2021 with an investment of €150 million
Three delivery stations in Brandizzo and Grugliasco (Torino metropolitan area), and Alessandria
An Amazon Fresh distribution centre in Torino

Economic impact data show that Amazon is an important growth engine for Piemonte: about 1,300 SMEs sell on Amazon and exported products worth more than €60 million in 2022. In addition to supporting the expansion of local industries, its investments directly or indirectly create numerous job opportunities and attract investment and innovation from new companies.
By the end of 2024, an investment of €120 million is planned for the opening of a supply centre in Alexandria: it will extend over an area of more than 60,000 square metres and will allow the creation of 400 new jobs within three years from the launch.
