PETRONAS Lubricants International and Piemonte: a history of collaboration and innovation

PETRONAS Lubricants International is the division of PETRONAS dedicated to the production and commercialization of high-quality lubricants and functional fluids for the automotive and industrial sectors on a global scale. Present in the Torino area for over 110 years, where it was founded in 1912 as the Lubricants Division of the Fiat Group, it evolved into Fiat Lubrificanti in the 1970s, later becoming FL Selenia in 2000 and finally joining PETRONAS in 2008. The headquarters is located in Kuala Lumpur and globally there are over 30 branches in 28 countries, managed through the regional offices based in Torino, Belo Horizonte, Beijing and Chicago. In Italy, PETRONAS Lubricants International employs 544 people, most of whom work at the company’s EMEA hub in Villastellone, in the province of Torino, while at the EMEA level there are 885 employees. In 2023, the revenue was approximately €660 million in the EMEA area and €470 million in Italy.

The project in Piemonte

In 2018, the company chose Piemonte to locate the PETRONAS Global Research & Technology Center, with an investment of 60 million dollars. The Center, located in Santena, in the province of Torino, was established to ensure the development of advanced and sustainable technologies for the global automotive and industrial markets. Furthermore, to honour its century-long bond with the Regione Piemonte (Regional Givenment) and the area in which it operates, in March 2023 PLI inaugurated the PETRONAS Heritage Highlights corporate museum. It retraces the key milestones and historical achievements of the company, showcasing the excellence that has made it a leader in the sector and displaying the technological innovations and sporting successes achieved over more than a century of activity.

PETRONAS Lubricants International is deeply connected to the Piemonte territory, the cradle of its history, due to the region’s significant role in the automotive sector and the high value-added professional skills it boasts. It is precisely in Santena, that the company made an impactful investment to establish the PETRONAS Global Research & Technology Center. Within this hub, with a constant commitment to innovation, PETRONAS Lubricants International invests in the area to create a positive impact in the Torino region. Today, the hub represents a Piemonte excellence thanks to state-of-the-art laboratories, facilities and equipment dedicated to the development of new fluid technologies. Since the inauguration of the Center, PETRONAS Lubricants International has continued to dedicate resources to activities in this area, creating synergies and local networks aimed at promoting and enhancing the territory and its communities.
