IOD - INDUSTRIAL OPPORTUNITY DAYS: FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TORINO, EUROPE’S MAJOR SCIENTIFIC LABORATORIES SEEK ITALIAN SUPPLIERS

Two days of meetings involving over 100 companies, institutions, and universities with representatives from scientific laboratories to explore projects, procurement processes, and new business opportunities. Among the most sought-after technologies are advanced electronics, precision mechanics, data management and security, and highly specialized components—covering several billion euros in contracts over the coming years, with Italian companies poised to secure a significant share.
Torino, June 12, 2025 – IOD – Industrial Opportunity Days – the biennial event designed to connect SMEs with prestigious entities in scientific research – is coming to Torino for the first time. Today and tomorrow, at the ITCILO Campus, 11 scientific laboratories and research institutions alongside 5 representatives from ILO Network Italia (comprising Liaison Officers from CNR, ENEA, INAF, and INFN) are presenting their activities, projects, procurement systems, and business opportunities for industry. The two-day intensive program includes plenary presentation sessions, training and networking moments, and over 200 meetings with companies from across Italy, offering an up-to-date overview of investment programs planned over the next years by Europe’s and Italy’s leading Big Science laboratories, along with related business opportunities and the criteria to become approved suppliers.
The initiative is organized by ILO Network Italia and Piemonte Agency, with financial support from the Torino Chamber of Commerce and under the patronage of Regione Piemonte (Regional Government). IOD is also part of the Tender project, funded by the Chambers of Commerce of Torino, Cuneo, and Monte Rosa Laghi Alto Piemonte, and managed by Piemonte Agency, which supports companies from Piemonte in the area of international procurement.
This event offers a unique opportunity to meet in person liaison officers and representatives from laboratories, European scientific projects, and national and international R&D centers, including ENEA, INAF (National Institute of Astrophysics), INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics), CNR, Elettra - Sincrotrone Trieste, CERN, ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility), Einstein Telescope, Fusion for Energy, to name just a few.
Italian industry continues to achieve excellent results in the highly competitive and technology-intensive field of supplying major European research projects. The forecast for the next four to five years estimates accessible contracts for Italian companies to be worth approximately one billion euros. This creates a highly promising environment where companies can collaborate with institutions, laboratories, and scientific projects and seize new business opportunities.
The goal of the extensive B2B program and panels—entirely dedicated on the second day to the nuclear sector, outlining current and future opportunities—is to connect research and industry by facilitating dialogue and understanding of research projects and procurement strategies. This fosters a match between supply and demand for technology, generates new contracts for Italian industry, leverages national know-how, and strengthens the role of Italian companies in major international scientific infrastructures. The sectors at the core of discussions with over 100 participants from industry, academia, and research include advanced electronics, cryogenics, precision mechanics, data management and security systems, as well as laser, optical, semiconductor technologies, complex industrial plants, and highly specialized components.
This event builds on activities started in 2020 by the Piemonte System, in close collaboration with ILO Network Italia, aimed at bringing the Big Science area closer to Italian companies. This involved a series of in-depth sessions focused on major scientific laboratories with Italian participation, attended by more than 300 companies from Piemonte and across Italy.
“IOD 2025 arrives in Torino thanks to the successful bid made a year ago by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and Piemonte Agency,” recalls Massimiliano Cipolletta, President of the Torino Chamber of Commerce. “It represents an important opportunity for our companies to expand markets and secure contracts: in the next four to five years, the value of tenders and calls for proposals offered to Italian companies by Europe’s major scientific laboratories will reach one billion euros.”
“The Network thanks the “Piemonte System", particularly the Chamber of Commerce and Piemonte Agency, for the opportunity to innovate our format with the aim of further spreading the contractual opportunities offered by Big Science among companies throughout the country,” states Corrado Perna, coordinator of ILO Network Italy.
“This edition of Industrial Opportunity Days fully aligns with Piemonte Agency’s strategy to bring internationally significant events to the region and facilitate direct encounters between our companies and major global clients,” says Dario Peirone, Chairman of Ceipiemonte. “Awarding IOD 2025 to Torino is recognition of the work started in 2020 with the Tender project, in partnership with the Torino Chamber of Commerce. Over these years, we have organized more than 15 meetings with major scientific laboratories and Big Science entities, involving over 300 companies to bridge industry and large research infrastructures and create real opportunities for access to global procurement systems.”
