Piemonte boasts a centuries-old tradition in the art of printing, which has been primarily concentrated in Torino since the 1800s. This city became a hub for publishing houses, newspapers with their typographic activities, and more recently, paper converting activities, including the construction of printing machinery.
Today, the region is home to numerous significant national publishing houses and hosts the Salone Internazionale del Libro di Torino, the International Book Fair that takes place every year in Turin. Piemonte offers a diverse entrepreneurial landscape that includes manufacturing companies involved in the supply chain, from the production of paper and paper products to printing and audiovisual reproduction, publishing, intermediation, and the promotion of book production and retail trade. This ecosystem is further enriched by complementary activities such as translation services and the work of libraries and archives.
Piemonte, which accounts for over 9% of the Italian publishing production, is home to 3,280 companies, with more than 60% concentrated in Torino and its province. This represents 6.8% of the national companies in the supply chain:
- 38% operate in the field of printing and audiovisual reproduction
- 22.6% are active in the publishing sector
- 14.2% are involved in brokerage and wholesale trade
- 11.3% are bookstores
- 8% manufacture paper and paper products.
The rapidly and continuously evolving market has triggered profound changes in publishing at an international level across all its forms—from information to entertainment to the dissemination of knowledge—making the boundaries of the publishing supply chain even more flexible. Piemonte, in alignment with new sector trends, is home to companies that address the emerging needs associated with the digitization process, which is increasingly revolutionizing the industry.
These include companies involved in software production, web portal design, news agencies, and other information services, as well as graphic design activities—a diverse and numerous groups of over 3,600 companies that support the publishing chain.
